A Downpipe is the pipe on a turbocharged  vehicle that connects the turbine exhaust housing to the catalytic converter. In most cases factory downpipes  are narrow in diameter and restrict the exhaust flow which prevents your car from breathing freely which in turn decreases its potential performance. This situation becomes especially problematic when you upgrade your turbo, and when the exhaust flow increases dramatically highly increasing the back pressure. To avoid that you need to upgrade your exhaust system and its components to more free-flowing performance oriented parts, and a downpipe is one of those very parts. A downpipe upgrade alone can yield an additional 8-20whp depending on your a tune and application.
